The researchers broke the action down to the three basic elements: the ball itself, the trajectory the ball takes, and the target towards which that trajectory is heading. Their system tracks and estimates that trajectory down to the point of the catch. It also provides users with that prediction, giving them a generally accurate of where their ball will end up, with a 95 percent catch rate in tests. The potential uses for such a system are myriad. Disney being Disney, it's easy to imagine video game or theme park applications. Athletic training is also a possibility: a baseball player could practice pitching while surrounded with stats or practice ignoring distractions.
The company has had a focus on simulation as of late, as well as leveraging unseen forces into something useful. All of these technologies could be coming together for one amazing amusement, each one could be used for a new ride or game. Disney also already has an Occulus app, but technology like this could allow it rapidly expand what's possible for the Mouse House.
